Kukim: Star City Sickness #01
Kukim was a band from Morgantown, WV in the mid 1990s that was formed out of the ashes of Lincoln. They had no official releases, but there's a handful of live recordings floating around. At one point Artmonk Construction advertised a Kukim EP, but nothing materialized. Like many of Jay Demko's bands, Kukim didn't last long; however, those that witnessed them live all agree -- they were simply amazing. Despite them leaving nothing behind to document their existence, witnesses to their live shows still thirst for more even though it has been over ten years since their break up.
I admittedly know very little about Kukim other than Jay Demko and Justin Wierbonski were members and were also in Lincoln and Enderhall, and other bands. If you have any information about them (stories, photos, audio, video), please leave a comment or email me.
The following songs were performed live on the U92 Morgantown Sound radioshow in 1994. I'd like to thank Kunari for the files. They are much higher quality than the ones that were up for download some while ago on the Morgantown Sound page before it went down, and he did some wonderful restoration work on them as well. Enjoy!
Kukim was:
Ben Doyle bass / vocals
Chris Turco guitar / vocals
Jay Demko guitar / vocals
Justin Wierbonski / drums

Thank you!
yeah man....thank you very much...this is really cool
Man, several years ago I was back in Indy in Fountain Square, ran into you, and you were talking about this band. A long-running obsession for you.

Matt: Who are you? Hit me up at indytone (at) antre.net.
Thank you so much! I saw this band at the neil house in Columbus and have been saying for years that it was one of the most incredible shows I've ever seen and never had anything to document or prove it. Now I do! You are awesome!
Another broken heart over another band I'll never get to see. Ah, how bittersweet.

thank you so much for posting this -- kukim (along with lincoln and enderhall) are one of my all-time favorite morgantown bands.
some info: bassist ben doyle (also in braille drivers -- www.myspace.com/brailledrivers) got married the other weekend, there's a post about it on my blog (jmarinelli.blogspot.com). me and kukim guitarist chris turco (who for a while played in the scene creamers, trans-am, and the pines of nowhere)played a song together at the ceremony.
also: drummer justin makes music in florida individually under the name fire ant (www.myspace.com/fire_ant) and collectively with the girls named lourdis (www.myspace.com/thegirlsnamedlourdis) -- both endeaveors are very, very worthwhile.
thanks again, and i'll send you whatever demko/turco/weirbonski/doyle recordings i can dig up.
cheers

I was one of the lucky ones that was part of the motown scene back then, and got to see Kukim play live just about every time they played. I was somewhat obsessed with them back then. They kicked @$%! They played an outdoor live show once, I think it was for the opening of the skateboard shop, in the alley between Wamsleys Cycles and Morgans sporting goods once... That pretty much kicked. Too bad they never made a go of it, but those of us that got to experience their jams were pretty happy. I still cherish an old tape I made of their live performance on Orvilles Motown sound on U92.
hi there,
i'm a french guy that's been into the whole 90's d.c. "emo" scene(and related) for years (hence i never had the chance to saw any of these bands, well, there's an exception as i saw the HOOVER reunion show in london a year+ ago) and i'd like to thank you for the great great great stuffs that's laid in here (even if i already had all that you've been posting... here) and it's amazing (well, conforting...) noticing people are still floored by this bunch of guys...
anyway, the link you're providing (http://kukim604.tripod.com) is working perfectly BUT stuffs that's been posted for download there do not work (i'd really like to get the GLENDALE .mp3's and LINCOLN videos...)
so, if anyone already managed to got these things, please please please get in touch...
thanks again.

These recordings are amazing! I downloaded them a while ago and finally got around to listening to them last saturday. I missed out on the Enderhall and Lincoln stuff... I'll try and find you on soulseek.
Thanks again for making these available!
I was lucky enough to see KUKIM play at a Hardcore/Punk festival in 94...(I think). It was phenominal. Delta 72 played so alot of people (J. Demko included) were dressed up like greasers...it blew my mind. I think he was drinking a 40oz. too which I thought was cool because 90% of the kids were straightedge. I had tons of pics but lost them all at a kinkos the next year. Thank you for this blog...I've been hunting for Kukim mentions for years and for an update on what the guys were doing.
Hi. I went to school in Morgantown 94-97. I live in Portland OR now. Thanks so much for this! I can't find my copy of this Kukim U92 show! This was my favorite band. Is still on the top of the list of bands I have ever heard.
I've heard old recordings of Kukim and listened to Enderhall live. Justin W. gave me a couple of 45s of Lincoln..we had an affair, I had a huge crush on him and we ended up staying over at each other's places a few times. I have this strange cassette tape of the guys in the band goofing off with sounds at home one time. They had this weird thing a ma-jig, that they could not even put a name to, that would make random distorted noises. thanks again.
Sorry for my post .Where i can watch more info about?
